With 65 AOCs, Bordeaux is the biggest producer of appellation wines in France by volume. This renowned destination has long been a ‘Benchmark’ for winemakers and wine lovers who love Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot.
A winemaking region since Roman times, Bordeaux is home to some of world’s most famous Châteaux (wine estates) including the instantly recognisable names of Margaux, Mouton-Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Latour and Cheval Blanc.
For winemaking purposes, the Bordeaux region is roughly divided into three areas:
1. The Left Bank’s Médoc and Graves lie on the Atlantic Ocean side of the rivers Gironde and Garonnne
2. The Right bank area lies to the east and north of the Dordogne
3. Entre Deux Mers lies between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers
