Beaujolais
--------------
Beaujolais is a wine region in eastern France, known for light, fruity red wines made from the Gamay varietal – with its high acidity, low tannins and red & black fruit flavours. The region is famous for more than its youthful Beaujolais Nouveau celebration. Our selection is centred on complex, structured Beaujolais Villages and Crus examples that represent the premium end.

Vineyards are typically planted on hilly terrain, and therefore hand harvested – with vines trained using 'gobelet' (aka head-pruned) techniques for optimal sun exposure and airflow from the semi-continental climate (which includes some temperate Mediterranean influences).
The Beaujolais wines we stock tend to be brought up in the Burgundian manner – employing tank maturation, while oak ageing adds depth and complexity. Beaujolais Cru wines made from Gamay Noir are fine and mineral-inflected (due to the varied minerality of the terroir), sharing similarities with Pinot Noir, but with a distinctive regional terroir and herbaceous quality. This grape is also considerably more forgiving to grow than its cousin in the Côte d'Or, and these wines are appealingly-priced to reflect that ease. We offer carefully selected wines from Dom. de Bel-Air, Ch. Fuissé and Dom. A.-F. Gros.
