Bordeaux Graves
Barsac | Graves | Pessac-Leognan | Sauternes
-------------
Located on the Western Coast of France, Graves is technically considered part of the Left Bank. Wines from the Bordeaux Graves region are lauded for their complexity, depth, and elegance, due in part to steady and increasing investment in technology, and a superb terroir that consistently produces great wine. Situated on the left bank of the Garonne River, Bordeaux Graves is one of Bordeaux’s oldest wine regions, and is named for its gravels. This soil type, combined with a maritime climate, creates excellent growing conditions for its key varietals.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec dominate the reds, while a characteristic Graves white is a dry, mid-bodied blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, which thrive in the stony ground. Or at the sweet, concentrated and zesty end of the sprectrum, Sauternes and Barsac wine greats to consider include Ch. d'YQuem and Ch. Coutet. Reds we recommend for being eminently drinkable are those from Pessac-Léognan. In fact, Peter Maude notes this area as his favoured source of Bordeaux reds – highly recommending the names Dom. de Chevalier and Ch. La Mission Haut Brion.
