Domaine Cros de Romet
Cairainne, Côte-du-Rhône Méridonale, France
“One of the best Côtes-du-Rhônes I have tasted in recent years.” Peter Maude.
Not only is Domaine Alain Boisson, Cairanne, Côte-du-Rhône Villages, “Cros de Romet” a very good value wine, you can expect a drop that is plushand intense on the palate but also beautifully balanced with lots of finesse. As Jeb Dunnuck from The Wine Advocate says: “(It) makes me want topour a big glass and kick back on the couch!”
Domaine Boisson was begun by Alain’s grandfather René in Cairanne in 1957, and the Cros de Romet is part of a separate set of vineyards now farmed and bottled by Alain. The first bottling was the 2002 vintage released in 2004. The domain covers 20 ha in Cairanne, Lagarde Paréol (Massifd’Uchaux) and Travaillan. The vineyards are Alain’s share of his father’s vineyards. His brother Bruno and his father Regis operate Domaine de Boisson together.
Averaging 80% Grenache (planted 1950s) and 20% Syrah. The soils are a mix of free-draining sand and gravel, with the bunches being 65% destemmed. Wild yeast ferment in concrete vats, then into very large old oak casks for 8-10 months.
