The Napa Valley region in California produces high-quality wines of diverse styles and varietals, and is well known for its boutique wineries, limited-production wines, and innovative winemaking. Its flagship red varietal is Cabernet Sauvignon, but Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Zinfandel feature prominently. Chardonnay dominates the white varietals, alongside Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Viognier. A Mediterranean climate of warm days and cool nights retains excellent acidity in the grapes, resulting in fine balance. Alluvial, volcanic, and sedimentary soil types add complexity to the wines.
