Burgundy
Situated in Eastern France, the Burgundy (Bourgogne) wine region encompasses - from North to South - Chablis, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise and Beaujolais. Burgundy being a mind-bogglingly complex area to summarise, here's our quick introduction for you.
Click here to read more. The Côte d’Or (Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune) was discovered as a very early source of excellent wines by local monks, who noted the subtle differences in the wine of various climats (parcels), even those very close together. These pious pioneers have given much to our understanding of how Burgundy’s terroir (soils, geology and minerality) influence each wine, alongside the weather of the vintage, vineyard practices and the winemaker’s approach.
The region is famous for producing some of the world's most prized wines. These are names of legend: iconic Pinot Noirs such as Vosne-Romanée or Gevrey-Chambertin, Puligny-Montrachet for Chardonnay, or Aligoté from Bouzeron. In a region renowned for excellence, wines are ranked from regional 'Bourgogne', to being named for its 'Village' (Chambolle-Musigny, for example), to Premier Cru, then Grand Cru.
