Ribera del Duero is home to Spain's top wines, most notably Pingus and Vega Sicilia. While still a relatively young Denominacion de Origen (established in 1982) - the area has been famous ever since the Romans grew grapes here - and the vines grown at Valduero are more than 50 years old on average.

A great deal of investment and skill has been utilised to create a great domaine making wines with distinction and character from old, mostly Tempranillo vines. The emphasis here is on tradition - including organic methods and skilled winemaking from Yolanda Garcia Viadero for the last 30 years. Her sister Carolina heads the marketing and export department.
As with all the best Spanish wines the amount of time spent in barrel, and resting in bottle in the cellar, is very important. They choose only to release once the wine is ready to drink. Still there's no hurry to drink them once they are bottled, but a certain smoothness is guaranteed. We have tasted a selection ourselves - and you will also see some very good results from DECANTER Magazine's World Wine Awards.
