Stretching from Lyon in the north to Avignon in the south, the Rhône Valley wine region in southeastern France is divided into two distinct sub-regions: the Northern Rhône and the Southern Rhône. The Rhône Valley is home to many of France's most famous appellations and produces a wide range of fine wines, from powerful red blends, to light, elegant rosés and full and textural white wines.

Excellent white wines are also produced here, with Viognier as the primary varietal in the north and blends of Marsanne, Roussanne, and Viognier used further south.
Winemaking in the Rhône Valley varies depending on the sub-region and appellation, but in general, wine is crafted using traditional techniques such as long maceration periods and extended barrel aging.
A Mediterranean climate brings hot, dry summers and mild winters, in a region partially protected from the Mistral wind by the Massif Central mountain range, which helps to moderate the climate and protect the vines from extreme weather events.
