Rioja produces high-quality reds made with the Tempranillo grape, while Ribera del Duero's Tempranillo's demonstrate the distinct minerality of its extreme climate, high altitude, and poor soils. Likewise, Priorat's pricy Garnacha (Grenache) and Cariñena-based red wines, derive their mineral character from their vertiginous slate-soil vineyards. Baixas produces crisp, refreshing white wines from Albariño grapes, with bright acidity from granite-based soils and a maritime climate. Made and fortified (mostly) from Palomino grapes grown in the desert-like climate and chalky soils of Jerez, comes Sherry's range of flavours from dry and nutty to rich and sweet.
