Peter Maude Fine Wines
2022, Domaine Bruno Clair, CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY, 1er Cru, 'Les Charmes'
The first sample was from a 2018 barrel which marked the wine a little too much. Mid purple. Riper on the nose and has taken the oak a bit more. Try another one. Much better. A sublime weight of perfectly ripe fruit whereas the other seemed over ripe. Excellent. **** 94-96 Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
Ripe aromas include those of essence of black cherry, violet and an array of spice elements. The slightly bigger-bodied flavours are also quite stony with excellent detail before culminating in a firmly austere and powerful finish that, in the same fashion as the Véroilles, stops just short of being strict. Excellent but patience strongly advised. This is a big Charmes. 91-93 Burghound.
The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has a very impressive bouquet with delineated black cherries and wild strawberry fruit, with lovely mineralité tucked underneath. The medium-bodied palate has filigree tannins. It is very elegant and approachable (apparently, it has always been generous). It finishes supple and pliant - this will be difficult to resist young. 92-94 Neal Martin, Vinous.
