2023, Domaine Marquis d'Angerville, VOLNAY, 1er Cru, 'Taillepieds'
$250.70 inc. GST
Taillepieds is at the core of Volnay – along with the Clos des Chênes to the south and Champans and Caillerets across the road, it is among the very best. The 2023 shows a firm tannic grip and a substantial, almost astringent character. Guillaume d'Angerville speculates it is the soil – clay at the top of the slope and white marl further down. The expressive fruit has aromas of plum and mulberry that open up on the palate and linger on the impressively long finish.
94 Charles Curtis MW, Decanter.
Between crimson and purple, with the sublime bouquet of ripe fruit, picked just the right side of the line. The structure is much more pronounced, both in tannins and acidity, with some orange zest rippling through the succulent red fruit. A contrast to the more ethereal style of Caillerets. Drink from 2032-2040.
**** 92-95 Jasper Morris MW.
The 2023 Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds is also especially charming out of the gates this year. Wafting from the glass with aromas of orange zest, dark berries, plums, vine smoke and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and succulent, with refined tannins and a long, mineral finish. This is an especially suave Taillepieds that will offer a broad drinking window.
92-94 William Kelley, Wine Advocate.
The 2023 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru dials up the marine element on the nose: hints of seaweed and oyster shell percolate through dark berry fruit as a subtle pencil box note gradually emerges. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins, nicely judged acidity and gentle grip on the finish. Stylish and suave, this is a very harmonious and pure Taillepieds that will be difficult to resist in its youth.
92-94 Neal Martin, Vinous.
