Peter Maude Fine Wines
2023, Domaine Henri Magnien, GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN, 'Champerrier'
$110.40 inc. GST
This wine was a hot favourite last year and looking superb for 2023.
Champerrier is a red-soil vineyard on the northern, Brochon side of Gevrey, lying where the slope begins to soften, beneath premier cru Les Champeaux. Vine-age averages more than 60 years, planted with very fine Pinots which Charles Magnien treasures – “I adore these small berries” he says. Colour is bright, purple-ruby of medium depth, aromas recall fresh cherries, palate shows ample fleshiness, with well-sustained volume, soft tannins to balance and a long, fresh finish (for drinking 2027-2032+).
Haynes Hanson & Clark, UK.
The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Champerrier is very pure and sensual on the nose, with generous red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit tones that envelop the senses. The palate is well balanced with a gentle grip, but there is more energy and greater frisson toward the finish than the Vieilles Vignes, which beckons you back for another sip. This is excellent.

Here too there is just enough wood to merit pointing out suffusing the compositionally similar, if less expressive, nose. The succulent and rounded medium weight flavours still manage to retain good detail on the solidly powerful, youthfully austere and moderately rustic finish that is both compact and robust. This is an excellent Gevrey villages that is worth your interest. OUTSTANDING.
