2021, Domaine Ponsot, MOREY-SAINT-DENIS, 'Cuvée des Grives'
The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Cuvée des Grives comes from shallow soils, the vines here are 16 years old. This possesses much more complexity and terroir expression on the nose than the Gevrey, sous-bois and truffle permeate the red fruit, with good vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh and smooth with lightly spiced dark cherry and orange zest notes on the finish. Lovely. 89-91 Neal Martin, Vinous (2022).
The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Cuvée des Grives exhibits aromas of plums and red berries mingled with peonies and spices. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's a step up in depth and persistence compared with the domaine's Gevrey. 88-90 William Kelley, Wine Advocate (2023).
The Morey is from the top of the hill whereas the Gevrey is lower slope (Epointures). Planted in 2006. A vivid, glowing purple. Rather more elegant nose here with slightly more depth to it. Very peppery finish, the mark of the vintage, but otherwise there is adequate ripeness, though quite high acidity. *** 88-90 Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy (2022).
