2022, Domaine du Pélican, ARBOIS, Chardonnay, 'En Barbi'
This has a little more body and depth to it than the Grand Couroulet but more crunch, too. Salty, stony and savoury with an almost Chablisien note. A dynamic wine with an energy derived from clean, clear mineral characteristics. Pelican have been farming this En Barbi parcel since 2012 with particular interest. It is a South-facing plot, sheltered from the winds due to its location at the end of an amphitheatre of hills surrounding it. Its southerly exposure accounts for the early and complete maturation at harvest time. The soil is silty clay over grey marls, resulting in excellent drainage and a low risk of hydric stress. This is also one of their highest vineyards, stretching up as far as around 390 metres above sea level.
The 2022 Chardonnay Arbois En Barbi is another single-vineyard offering from Domaine du Pélican. Wafting from the glass with precise yellow apple, flintstone and lemon flesh, the 2022 shines with a focused finish. This clear-cut Chardonnay shows a little more ambition than the Grand Curoulet from the same vintage. 91 Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous (2024).
