Peter Maude Fine Wines
2020, Domaine A. -F. Gros, SAVIGNY-LES-BEAUNE "Clôs des Guettes"
This is a lovely wine that can have a touch of earthiness when young - but in a warm vintage the fruit really shows through - plus it ages really well. Great wine for the cellar.
A rich purple colour though still with a pink tinge. The fruit is noticeably riper, very opulent ripe red cherries, but not cooked. Powerful on the palate, just a little dry at the end. No whole bunches were used. Fresh enough finish. *** 89-91 Jasper Morris MW.
An earthier nose combines notes of poached plum, dark currant and a violet hint. The succulent, round and decidedly suave medium-bodied flavours possess a highly seductive mid-palate that contrasts somewhat with the dusty, sappy and slightly austere finale that is noticeably warm. 89-91 Burghound.
This is pleasant and enjoyable, with a fresh perfume and a light, floral nose, although it is lacking a bit of the concentration and power that other domaines can pull from this site. The domaine owns 0.66ha of old vines here in the south-facing Aux Guettes (which they call Clos des Guettes). The vines are all propagated using massale selection and the harvest is destemmed. 91 Charles Curtis MW, Decanter Magazine.
